This pair of buttons are the least intuitive buttons of the entire menu. I want to be able to maximize my efficiency, instead of working around a bunch of buttons that aren’t useful to me but are useful to others. Hide buttons that I never use, or create key shortcuts for my favorite functions. To get “rid” of a toolbar one would have to minimize it. Not only are there toolbars but there are also menus with all the same buttons. How is this a learning tool when its so limited? Get rid of it or have it search Google images. But it is still offered as a button because words like “cat” or “horse” work great but even simple words like “tree” and “squirrel” are beyond its abilities. So limited that it would be useless to a dyslexic kindergartener who is trying to realize the difference between the meanings of “Tree,” “Three,” and “Thee,” let alone a dyslexic college student who’s trying to learn the differences between binary search trees. Probably because it has a very limited database of pictures to reference. If a blind person did get it semi working the menu only uses one voice in its menu and its not the VW Julie, and therefore the pronunciation is very garbled. Thank my lucky stars, I’m not blind it would never work, unfortunately that’s the demographic that Kurzweil advertises for. I mosey along reading short passages using the translation button when I need it. So for my lower level classes I can’t just press play and have it read to me the chapter. Yet Kurzweil doesn’t support all languages, only 7 languages, which is a doable problem especially since there is a “Detect Language” function built into the translation menu but this option isn’t actually built into the normal reading mode of Kurzweil. Truly something to strive for, and understandably ignored. From a programming stance this is truly a very difficult problem to detect 1 out of all the languages in the world. Because both languages are written even in simple lines such as “Trees: Bäume,” Kurzweil doesn’t know for which language its trying to synthesize the phonemes. Yet in my lower level classes where the books are written in both German and English, Kurzweil stops being so wonderful. The best use of this button is in my upper level German classes where I have to read German books. It works pretty well for a few words at a time.
The translate button opens up bilingual learning. I would like some improvements in the following areas: Yet a service that started 18 years ago that costs $1395 a copy is lacking in quality for the cost and time. Its also the only service with the speed of 600 words per minute I haven’t seen anything as fast. Cambium Learning Company’s customer service is actually very helpful. The voice synthesizer is the best I’ve seen I absolutely love VW Julie. Kurzweil 3000 does a good job at the OCR ( Optical character recognition).
